Grandma Needs A New Pair of Shoes

Press Release from Pedors Shoes

Don't roll the dice when choosing shoes for seniors. Minimize Fall Risk with Appropriate Footwear.

Marietta GA June 14th 2023 Pedors Shoes, a manufacturer of orthopedic footwear, is pleased to announce a collaboration with Argentum to raise awareness of the importance of evaluating footwear to minimize fall risk.

Pedors will release a white paper covering the twelve key fall prevention topics as they relate to footwear for seniors with special footwear needs such as edema, lymphedema, arthritis, diabetes, vascular disease, peripheral neuropathy, bunions, corns, hammertoes and other forefoot deformities.

As Pedors President Stephen O’Hare explains, “overall healthcare and foot care are inextricably related - if a resident cannot find footwear that fits or is comfortable, then they often go barefoot which increases the risk of trauma, injury and fall.”  O’Hare elaborates, “patient compliance in wearing appropriate footwear increases the success of fall prevention strategies and increases resident mobility, overall health, independence, quality of life and even mental health”.

The white paper will cover risk assessment, anatomy and physiology, exercise and physical activity, home and environmental modifications, assistive devices and technology, medication review, vision and eye health, nutrition and bone health, psychological factors and fear of falling, fall prevention strategies and interventions and communication and education.

A study by the National Institute On Aging, a division of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, along with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that higher daily step counts were associated with lower mortality risk from all causes. 65% lower risk for all-cause mortality when walking 12,000 steps per day compared with 4,000 steps and 51 % for 8,000 steps per day compared with 4,000 steps.
